Putin to meet with world leaders, attend 2018 FIFA World Cup

Russian President Vladimir Putin will continue a series of meeting with foreign leaders, who arrive in Moscow to attend the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Sunday.

Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov earlier said that Putin will hold talks with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and with French President Emmanuel Macron and Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, whose national teams will battle for the trophy.

In addition, Putin will meet with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani after a ceremony of handing over the hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup to Qatar.

The leaders of France and Croatia have already visited Russia during the World Cup. However, official talks with the top-ranking guests were not on Putin’s work schedule.

According to Ushakov, Putin and Macron are expected to discuss, among other things, the NATO summit held in Brussels on July 11-12 and the upcoming meeting between the Russian and US leaders in Helsinki on July 16

"We expect the French president to brief us on the results of the NATO summit. Naturally, various aspects of our upcoming contact with [US President Donald] Trump in Helsinki will be discussed too," Ushakov said. He noted that Macron had met with Trump in Brussels and "would share his thoughts." "We too will speak about our preparations for the summit," the Kremlin aide added.

The official said that Macron had taken part in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in May. "Now (there will be) a continuation of that conversation. The two presidents will exchange views on the current state of relations and their further development," he said.

During the talks with the prime minister of Hungary, the Russian president is expected to discuss "various aspects of bilateral relations." "An agreement has been reached on Orban’s visit to us in September. Evidently, the situation in the run-up to this visit will be discussed," Ushakov said.

Later in the day, the Russian president will attend the 2018 FIFA World Cup final in Luzhniki.

Together with Putin, the game will be watched by "11 or 12 presidents of various countries, several prime ministers and many other high-ranking representatives of foreign states.".
