Dead Sea: giant funnels and placers of "diamonds"

Near the area of the Dead Sea, there are about 6,500 giant karst craters that absorb homes and destroy roads. Scientists have an explanation for the phenomenon.
It is associated with climatic changes and dehydration of the sea, which provokes the drying of salt.

The area with karst funnels is fenced, protected, and access to its territory is possible only with the accompaniment of a "guide". But even in this case, the tourist risks "fail".

Every year the dry sea of the Dead Sea recedes more than one meter. The water exposes the deposits of salt. Under the scorching sun rays it dries, the surface sinks, forming funnels. The largest of them reach a diameter of 40-50 meters.

According to Israeli expert Eli Raza, who has been studying karstic funnels for 17 years, people's attention to the ecological crisis of the Dead Sea is not enough. The scientist believes that in the near future should be set all the causes of drying, and at least slow it down.

At the same time, like others, he celebrates the incredible beauty of landscapes. He specifies that "salt diamonds" - idiomorphic crystals of salt - and "salted pearls" are formed on the shore.
