The issue of election of a new human rights commissioner (Ombudsperson) will not be discussed at the ongoing session of Azerbaijan’s parliament as the discussion of draft decision on new candidates to the post of Ombudsperson has been postponed until the spring session of 2018.
Azerbaijan’s Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsperson) Elmira Suleymanova’s term of office expired on March 5, 2017. Election of a new Ombudsperson was expected to be discussed in the autumn session. However, Elmira Suleymanova, who was elected twice—in 2002 and 2010, remains in the post as election of a new ombudsperson has been postponed.
