Expansion of Israeli presence in Africa

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is on a visit to Kenya, said that Israel would open an embassy in Rwanda.

Netanyahu secured this agreement by shaking hands with the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, during their meeting in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.

"The opening of the embassy is part of the expansion of Israel's presence in Africa and the deepening of cooperation between Israel and the African countries," Netanyahu said in his statement.

His visit to Kenya is the third in Africa for a year and a half.

In addition to meeting with Kagame, Netanyahu also met with the leaders of Kenya, Gabon, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Southern Sudan, Botswana, Namibia and Ethiopia.

Israel and Rwanda restored diplomatic ties in 1994 after they were ripped in 1973 during the Yom Kippur War. At the same time, Israel did not have an embassy in Rwanda.
