Turkey commemorates Ataturk on 79th death anniversary

The 79th death anniversary of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the leader of the Turkish forces in the War of Liberation and the founder of the Republic of Turkey, was marked with ceremonies throughout the country.

Kanal24 reports citing Daily Sabah that as is the annual tradition, daily life stopped as sirens wailed throughout the country at 9:05 a.m., the time he passed away in 1938, and people observed two minutes of silence.

Thousands of people flocked to the mausoleum of Ataturk in Ankara to commemorate the founding father of the Republic of Turkey.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Chair Kemal Kılıchdaroglu, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chair Devlet Bahcheli and Chief of General Staff General Hulusi Akar also attended the commemoration ceremony at the mausoleum, known as Anıtkabir.
