The Knesset supported the "Law on Jerusalem"

The Knesset approved in preliminary reading the "Law on Jerusalem", which would limit the government's ability to divide the capital in any future agreement on the final status of the Palestinian Authority.
The bill, which was proposed by the Beit Ha-Yehudi Party, requires that any decision on the division of the city be accepted by a majority of not less than 80 Knesset members.
The authors of the initiative are Education Minister Naftali Bennet and MK Shuli Molem-Raphaely.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vetoed a similar bill after objections from the Ministry of Jerusalem Affairs in connection with the alleged inability to consult with the ministry and minister Zeev Elkin (Likud) on the drafting of the bill.
After the vote, MP Mualem-Raphaeli stated that the adoption of the law guarantees that the city will always remain in Israel's hands.
Turning to the Arab deputies, she said: "Get this into your head: Jerusalem was the capital of the Jewish people and will always remain it".
Maulem-Raphaely added that this is a unique opportunity to preserve the unity of the capital, which can not be violated.
"Taking into account our past experience and in the light of the current composition of the coalition, we are obliged to protect [Jerusalem] from any possible outcome of the future negotiation process. Even if there is no threat to the unity of Jerusalem in the near future, past experience has taught us that there are surprises. "
Minister for Jerusalem Affairs Zeev Elkin positively noted the results of the vote, saying that the law would protect "the status of Jerusalem as the united capital of Israel and in the future will prevent anyone who dares to divide it."
