Egypt will allocate $ 2.2 million for the restoration of the synagogue for 18 Jews

The government of the country for the first time approved the financing of such a project
The Egyptian government will finance the restoration of the Eliyahu ha-Navi synagogue in Alexandria.

The cost of the project will be about $ 2.2 million, while the Jewish community in the city has only 18 people.
Information about the launch of the project was confirmed by the head of the department of Islamic and Coptic antiquities Helmi Ezz. The decision was made despite the fact that according to the Egyptian laws all the costs associated with the objects of the Jewish community should be paid by the community itself.
The "Eliyahu ha-Navi" synagogue was built in 1850, when at least 20,000 Jews lived in Alexandria. For several months the historical building is in an emergency condition - the roof collapsed. Repair work will begin after the Israel Antiquities Authority approves the reconstruction plan.
