Israel's most successful basketball team signs its first Arab-Israeli player

Karam Mashour was born in Nazareth to an Arab Christian family

Maccabi Tel Aviv, arguably Israel's most famous basketball team, announced on Sunday the signing of their first Arab Israeli player.

Karam Mashour, who stands at 6 feet 4 inches, is a 25-year-old small forward who was born in Nazareth to a Christian family, and began playing basketball at the age of 13 for the youth department of Maccabi YMCA before moving to the youth team at Emeq Yisrael.

He played for UNLV for two years before moving to Kentucky where he played for Morehead State. In the summer of 2015, he signed with Bnei Herzliya, and it's from that team that he will transfer to Maccabi Tel Aviv.

The Times of Israel reports that Maccabi Tel Aviv posted a picture across its social media accounts to herald the new signing, but managed to mess up the Arabic writing, posting from left-to-right instead of right-to-left.

Spokesperson for the team, Nitzan Feraro told The Times of Israel that the mistake had been noticed “within minutes and corrected accordingly.” He offered an apology for the error and said that the situation shouldn't be blown out of proportion.

Mashour has signed a two-year deal with an option for a third season.

Maccabi Tel Aviv plays in the Israel's basketball Premier League and internationally in the EuroLeague. Founded in the mid-1930s, the club has won six European Championships, one Adriatic Championship, 51 Israeli Championships, 44 Israeli Cups, and six League Cups.
